Michael Slepian and his colleague interviewed 1500 individuals from a wide range of identities including women working in male-dominated fields. They found that when employees felt like they didn’t belong in the workplace, they felt like they couldn’t be themselves at work.

He suggests that managers should do the following:
  • Recognise but not overemphasize differences 
  • Focus on the creation of identity-safe environments.
  • Make sure that employees’ feel that support systems are available, because feelings of support and being valued are critical.
